Forgiveness Without Limit
Matthew 18:21-35How many times should you forgive someone? Peter thought seven was generous.
Something new this week. Sunday's sermon came with a worksheet, and your student is bringing it home. We're trying this because a sermon can be agreed with and forgotten by lunch — a page in their own handwriting is harder to walk away from.
The passage was Matthew 18:21–35. Peter asks Jesus how many times he has to forgive someone, and Jesus tells a story about a servant who is forgiven an impossible debt — and then walks straight out and grabs a man who owes him a little. The question underneath it is not how many times. It's whether we believe what God forgave us was actually cancelled, or whether we're still quietly working it off. Because a person who thinks they're still paying will always make other people pay.
Page 1 works through the passage itself — what happens, what the numbers mean, what the text actually says. Page 2 turns to their own heart, and please don't ask to see it. They were told nobody would collect it. If they think you'll read it, they'll write the safe answer — which is exactly the polite distance this passage exposes.
Here's what you can do:
Go first. This week at the table, tell your child about someone you have had a hard time forgiving. Briefly. No lesson at the end. A parent who says I've been carrying this and I haven't put it down gives their child permission no question can give.
Then stop. Don't follow it with questions that night. Let it sit.
Want more? Page 1 is safe to do together — open a Bible and work through it with your student. And sections 5–7 are worth doing on yourself; the diagnosis isn't age-specific.
We'd love to know if this is useful — tell us, and we'll keep doing it.
