Make the First Move: What to Do When Someone Wrongs You
Matthew 18:15–20When someone sins against you, Jesus says: go to them. Not to win an argument — to win a brother.
Last week we saw the heart of reconciliation — forgiveness without limit, because that's exactly how God has forgiven us in Christ. This week we come to the practice. Forgiveness happens inside you, alone; but reconciliation takes two people. So how do you actually do it? In Matthew 18:15–20 Jesus gives us three movements.
Go
If your brother sins against you, you go — you make the first move, instead of waiting for an apology. There are really only three ways we respond when we're wronged: a peace-faker avoids it and pretends everything's fine; a peace-breaker attacks and vents to everyone; but Jesus calls us to be peace-makers who actually go to the person (Matthew 5:9). And notice it has to be real sin — not just a preference they didn't meet, and bigger than a rulebook: any way of seeing or thinking that runs contrary to the gospel. That distinction is the guardrail: this isn't a license to vent, it's a rescue. Sin is a cruel master that holds people hostage without their even feeling it — so you go the way a shepherd goes after a lost sheep, already forgiving, to set them free. The real enemy was never your brother. It's the sin.

Circles
Jesus draws three concentric circles, and the rule is to keep it as small as possible, widening only when the person won't listen. First, just you and them — go directly, to get on the same page, not to point fingers. If that fails, bring two or three wise, godly people so every fact is established. If that fails, tell the church — not to shame, but because you matter too much to lose. And even the last step, "treat them as a Gentile and tax collector," is not a cutting-off: remember how Jesus treated Gentiles and tax collectors — he pursued them. The door stays open.

Presence
"Where two or three gather in my name, there I am." When you're in the middle of a conflict and feel completely alone, you are not. Christ himself is in the room — and there is nothing he wants more than for you to be reconciled. He proved it on the cross, where he gave his life to make us one, with God and with each other.
There is no better feeling on earth than two people who hated each other reconciling in tears. That's a taste of heaven — the day every wrong is made right and we are one in him. We sinned against God, and he came after us anyway. So we go. Not to win an argument — to win a brother.
Discussion Questions
- When someone wrongs you, what's your default — a peace-faker (avoid and pretend it's fine), a peace-breaker (blow up and vent to everyone), or a peace-maker (actually go to them)? Why that one?
- Jesus says the person who was wronged is the one who goes first. Why is that so backwards from how we usually think?
- What's the difference between someone sinning against you and someone just not meeting your preferences — and why does that matter before you go to them?
- "Treat them as a Gentile and tax collector" sounds like cut them off. But how did Jesus actually treat Gentiles and tax collectors? So what does that line really mean?
- Who is one person you've quietly written off and called it "peace" — and what would it look like to go to them this week?
