I was born and raised in Southern California to Korean immigrant parents. I studied applied mathematics at UCLA, then went into documentary filmmaking to tell the stories of missionaries. In 2005, while filming in India, I couldn't stop thinking about the millions of people who had never heard the gospel, and one verse wouldn't leave me: “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” That was my call. I've been pastoring ever since — most of it in the Korean American church.

When Choong Hyun and Charis asked me to lead their youth, I came because of a conviction I'd carried for years: a student can't be discipled apart from their family. A youth group on its own track — separate from parents, separate from the rest of the church — tends to lose kids the moment they graduate. Telos is my answer to that. I want to shepherd students inside their families and inside the whole congregation, not off in a room by themselves.

I've been married to my wife Soojin since 2005, and we have three teenage children, which means the kids at my own dinner table are the same age as the students I pastor.

Right now Telos brings our middle and high school students together under one ministry — grades 6 through 12, around 120 of them. I can't know every one of them the way I'd want to, and that's exactly why Telos is built the way it is: Teachers who know each student by name, older students who make sure no one stands alone, and parents we want to stand beside rather than replace.

저는 한인 이민자 부모님 아래에서 남가주에서 나고 자랐습니다. UCLA에서 응용수학을 전공한 뒤, 선교사들의 이야기를 전하는 다큐멘터리 영화 제작의 길로 들어섰습니다. 2005년 인도에서 촬영하던 중, 복음을 한 번도 들어 보지 못한 수많은 사람들이 마음에서 떠나지 않았고, 한 말씀이 계속해서 저를 붙들었습니다. “추수할 것은 많되 일꾼이 적으니.” 그것이 저의 부르심이었습니다. 그 후로 지금까지 목회의 길을 걸어왔으며, 그 대부분을 미주 한인 교회에서 섬겼습니다.

충현선교교회와 Charis Mission Church가 저에게 중고등부를 맡아 달라고 청했을 때, 저는 오랫동안 품어 온 한 가지 확신 때문에 이 자리에 왔습니다. 학생은 가정과 떨어져서는 제자로 자랄 수 없다는 확신입니다. 부모님과도, 교회의 나머지 공동체와도 분리된 채 따로 운영되는 청소년부는 학생들이 졸업하는 순간 그들을 잃어버리기 쉽습니다. 텔로스는 그 문제에 대한 저의 응답입니다. 저는 학생들을 따로 떨어진 방 안에서가 아니라, 그들의 가정 안에서, 그리고 온 교회 공동체 안에서 목양하고자 합니다.

저는 2005년에 아내 수진과 결혼했고, 십대 자녀 셋을 두고 있습니다. 그래서 저희 집 식탁에 둘러앉은 아이들은 제가 목양하는 학생들과 같은 또래입니다.

현재 텔로스는 6학년부터 12학년까지, 약 120명의 중등부와 고등부 학생들을 하나의 사역 안에 함께 품고 있습니다. 제가 바라는 만큼 그 모든 학생을 깊이 알 수는 없습니다. 바로 그렇기에 텔로스는 지금의 모습으로 세워졌습니다. 학생 한 사람 한 사람을 이름으로 아는 교사들, 누구도 혼자 서 있지 않도록 곁을 지키는 선배 학생들이 있습니다. 그리고 저희는 부모님의 자리를 대신하기보다, 곁에서 든든한 조력자가 되고자 합니다.
